Surgical Q/A

How do I go about getting an initial evaluation and what is the cost?
Patients are encouraged to send their clinical information in for an evaluation. We will need copies of your actual MRI films, plus results from any tests that relate to your condition, such as blood work or visual field exams. To ensure a thorough evaluation, we recommend that you consult with one of our nurses who will assist in collecting the needed information. Call (310) 691-8888.

If I need surgery, how long of a wait will I have to get on the surgical schedule?
If you can provide us with three tentative dates (we perform surgeries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays), we will do our best to accommodate one of the dates requested.

If I were traveling from out of town, how long would I need to be in Los Angeles to have endoscopic surgery?
Most patients spend an average of one week in Los Angeles. An example itinerary would be the following: Sunday Travel to LA; Monday Office consultation with Dr. Shahinian and meet your Skull Base Team; Tuesday Surgery; Wednesday/Thursday Release from the hospital; Friday/Saturday Relax and recover locally; Sunday/Monday Follow up appointment and clearance for flight.

Can I fly after Endoscopic surgery?
Yes, most patients fly after surgery with no problems.

Will I have to travel back to Los Angles for follow-up after surgery?
No. Prior to your return, we will help make arrangements with your local physicians to participate in any follow-up care you may need. You will receive multiple follow-up calls from our nurses who will monitor your recovery, and our staff is available 24 hours a day to answer any questions.

Yes, We keep a patient referral list. Please ask us about our patient-to-patient resource program. Contact us and we will connect you.

Will I need any testing before surgery?
Hospitals require patients to have certain tests performed prior to surgery. This may include: Blood work, Chest X-ray, EKG, and a History and Physical. Patients with a history of cardiac or respiratory disease may also require clearance from their specialist prior to surgery. Many times, your own physician(s) may perform these pre-operative requirements. One of our nurses will help coordinate this testing.
